What a psychiatric evaluation is
A psychiatric evaluation is a detailed conversation, supported by standardized questionnaires when useful, that helps clarify what's causing your symptoms and what will help. It's the foundation for everything that follows, whether that's a diagnosis, a medication recommendation, a referral for therapy or testing, or reassurance.

Evaluations for children and teens
For patients under 18, a parent or guardian participates. We talk with both the child and the parent, and teens also get time to speak privately. We may ask for school reports, teacher rating scales or records from your pediatrician. More about child and adolescent care →

- Clear initial impressions, in plain language
- A treatment plan you helped shape, which may include medication, therapy, lab work, lifestyle steps or further testing
- A follow-up schedule and a way to reach the practice through the secure portal
Sometimes the most honest answer after a first visit is “we need a bit more information.” If so, we'll explain what's needed and why.

Common questions
How long is a psychiatric evaluation?
Plan for about 60 minutes. Child and adolescent evaluations may take a little longer.
Will I get a diagnosis at the first visit?
Often, yes. Sometimes more information such as records, rating scales or lab results is needed before a diagnosis is clear.
Is this the same as psychological testing?
No. A psychiatric evaluation is a clinical interview focused on diagnosis and treatment, including medication. Psychological or neuropsychological testing is a separate, hours-long assessment done by a psychologist. We'll let you know if testing would help.
