Starting a psychiatric medication is an important decision, and you deserve to understand it. These are the questions we encourage every patient (and parent) to ask.
- What is this medication for, and why this one? Understand the goal and why it was chosen over alternatives.
- What are the other options, including non-medication options? Therapy, lifestyle changes or watchful waiting may be reasonable.
- How long until I notice a difference? Some medications work in hours; others take weeks.
- What side effects are common, and which are serious? Know what's expected, what usually fades, and what warrants a call.
- Does it interact with my other medications, supplements, alcohol or cannabis? Bring a complete list.
- How will it affect sleep, appetite, weight or energy? These matter for daily life and long-term health.
- Do I need lab work or other monitoring? Some medications need periodic blood tests or vital signs.
- What if I miss a dose? Know the plan ahead of time.
- How long will I take it? Understand the expected course and how that decision will be revisited.
- How do I stop safely? Many psychiatric medications shouldn't be stopped suddenly. Always talk with your prescriber first.
For parents
Also ask how the medication has been studied in children or teens, how school performance and growth will be monitored, and what warning signs to watch for at home.
A good prescriber welcomes these questions. Medication decisions at Joy Integrative Psychiatry are always made together.
